We'll Leave the Light On for You

The current electrical energy crisis in California has achieved headline status throughout the world. And rightfully so. As our California politicians love to point out, if California were an inde- pendent country, it would boast the world's eighth largest economy. By any measure, it's big news when a state of our size and our stature experiences problems more common to the third-world. The rolling blackouts which have become an occasional part of California life are not just inconvenient, they mean hard times for the many businesses which depend on electrical power for their daily operations. Picture all those Silicon Valley computer companies--already struggling to keep pace with the high cost of doing business here in the Golden State--now faced with spiraling energy prices and the threat of power outages.

It's at times like these that we have to thank our lucky stars that Glenair was founded in Glendale, California, and that we have had the sense to stay put in this well-managed, Southern California community. Given the current energy crisis, this may sound a bit crazy. But the happy news is that Glendale, together with a handful of other Southern California cities, opted out of the California state energy deregulation program and chose to maintain its own independent municipal power plants. Which means that at Glenair, we are NOT subject to power blackouts. On the contrary, our local Glendale power department assures us they have ample power generating capacity, enough to meet even peak, summer-season demands.

All of which brings me to recall a favorite Glenair Guiding Principle, Trust Your Judgement, which states in part that "There is no comprehensive 'book of rules' for every situation affecting customer satisfaction. In the absence of a specific service principle or quality standard, use your own best judgement to solve problems and meet customer needs..." The reason I mention this principle here, is that the decision to remain in Glendale, instead of following the rest of the aerospace industry out of California, was a judgement call on Glenair's part. In measuring the benefits of staying put in our hometown community, versus relocating outside of the state or country, Glenair chose to stand fast. Today we are happy to report that the City of Glendale has, once again, reaffirmed our faith in the wisdom of that choice.

Our hopes and prayers go out to those businesses, communities, and individuals who are bearing the brunt of California's latest crisis. The sign at the Glendale city limit proclaims: "Welcome to Glendale." In light of the current energy crisis, I suggest they add the tag-line: "We'll Leave the Light on For You".
