Line ‘em Up

Glenair’s Microway line of TwistPin Connectors offers un-compromised performance in a microminiature package. The products are perfectly suited for interconnect applications where reduced size, weight and environmental performance are the principal design requirements. The full-spectrum product line includes MIL-DTL-83513 Micro-D connectors, solder cups, pigtail cables, printed circuit boards, backshells, connector savers, MicroStrips, MicroEdgeboard, accessories and hardware. Custom connectors, flex circuits, cable assemblies and harnesses are also available and are a major value-added strength of the Microway product division.

Glenair’s Microway TwistPin products feature a unique low force, rugged spring pin recessed into the insert to prevent contact damage. Epoxy sealing and interfacial seals provide environmental protection. The 3 amp contact system can be terminated to #24 through #30 AWG insulated wire. Liquid crystal polymer insulators and machined aluminum connector bodies withstand up to 200° C operating temperature for demanding environments such as encountered in geophysical exploration. Commonly supplied as pre-wired assemblies, Microway connectors feature a precision four-indent crimp joint for outstanding reliability. Available in a wide range of sizes and configurations, Microway TwistPin products are adaptable to virtually any miniaturized interconnect application.

If at Disney they are fond of saying that "it all started with a mouse", at Microway, it clearly all started with the "TwistPin Contact System". In fact, it was the reliability and performance of TwistPin contacts, when compared to stamped contacts, which led Dr. Zic to go out on his own to form Microway. "The opportunity to build a business based on the TwistPin was just too good to be ignored. We saw that a growing trend in electronics was miniaturization, and that the existing manufacturers were inexplicably reluctant to embrace the superior TwistPin system - a system which we felt strongly was the real key to producing rugged, high-reliability connectors. So, we built the machines and fixtures to automate the production of TwistPin contacts, and started our own company - Microway Systems". Today, virtually every product produced by the division leverages the TwistPin contact system.

Although two types of micro contacts meet the requirements of MIL-DTL-83513 (the Mil Standard covering the division’s core Micro-D connector products) independent testing has shown Microway’s new advanced TwistPin to far outperform alternative stamped and formed contacts. Not only is the TwistPin more rugged than a stamped pin, it also provides a superior wire attachment, which translates to superior shock and vibration performance. The TwistPin’s brass sleeve allows a four indent gas-tight crimp, ensuring excellent tensile strength and low circuit resistance. As miniaturizing high-reliability connectors can lead to compromises in performance, the development of the TwistPin has allowed a wide range of commercial and military customers to design extremely small interconnect wiring systems with increasing levels of confidence. In fact, Microway’s TwistPin contact is the only one of its kind to pass the stringent British standard for microminiature connector contacts.
