| Such rigid attention to customer requirements is not limited to the inspection crew: in many ways it forms the backbone of the entire division’s work ethic, from engineering to production control. "We generally work to tolerances of 2 tenths of a mil - that’s a two with three zeros in front of it," explains Don Carroll the division’s General Manager. "As you can imagine, this pushes most conventional machine processes to their outer limits". When describing the Microway factory, Carroll is inclined to put his hands to work and illustrate his points with a product or tool in his grip, in this case an in-process MicroEdgeboard with an insert molded shell. Carroll explains that the division is re-tooling many such aluminum shells to accept molded plastic inserts. The goal is to re-engineer the product to more easily control key dimensions and tolerances, thus providing a more reliable end-product than previous versions.
Precision molded inserts and other such technical innovations abound at Microway, in large part because the roots of the division are thoroughly grounded in the engineering side of the micro |
