enair's Fiber Optic Product Manager, Greg Noll, loves to talk about the large "bandwidth" potential of Fiber Optics. In fact, it's the ability of optical fibers to transmit such large amounts of data so quickly that makes the product so

appealing for applications where fast and reliable data transmission is a requirement.
But what exactly does the "Unlimited Bandwidth of Fiber Optics" mean in the real world? Consider the following:

A copper wire can transmit 10 billion bits of information 186,281 miles in one second.

An optical fiber can transmit 8 trillion bits of information in the same time over the same distance.

To understand the difference between a billion and a trillion, if you were to count at the rate of one digit per second 24 hours per day, it would take 32 years to count to one billion...and 32,000 years to count to one trillion.
All the recorded written word since the beginning of time could be transmitted over a fiber the size of a human hair in 12 seconds.
