A New Industry StandardNot long ago, nanominiature connectors lacked an industry standard specification. Designing a nano connector into an electronics system required the user to create specifications tied to a single manufacturer. There was no guarantee of interchangeability or intermateability between suppliers. The Defense Supply Center, Columbus (DSCC) created the nanominiature specification in response to a need for a standardized, multiple source ultraminiature connector. Manufacturers and users worked together to create a single standard procurement specification to assure that connectors made by different suppliers will be intermateable and interchangeable. This spec, released in 2003, now enables aerospace manufacturers to specify standard nanominiature connectors interchangeable and intermateable with multiple manufacturers. The specification consists of a Detail Specification (the general performance spec) and Detail Specification Sheets (the “slash” sheets). The Detail Specification At-A-Glance The detail specification defines materials, finishes and performance requirements. The spec allows a variety of connector constructions as long as the connector will meet the performance requirements. The mil spec requires the contact system to use a spring pin and a tubular socket. The spring pin can either be a stamped leaf-spring or a TwistPin. The specification requires manufacturers to perform a series of electrical, mechanical and environmental tests in order to be eligible for listing as an approved supplier. When DSCC approval is granted, the manufacturer is added to the Qualified Products List (QPL-32139, not released). MIL-DTL-32139 invokes the use of service marks “JAN” or “J” immediately preceding the part number. These service marks may be used only on items that fully meet the requirements of the specification. The Slash Sheets At-A-Glance The detail specification sheets provide part numbers and configurations for ordering. Four slash sheets have been released: M32139/01: metal shell, single row plug, wired M32139/02: metal shell, single row, receptacle, wired M32139/03: metal shell, two row, plug, wired M32139/04: metal shell two row, receptacles, wired More slash sheets will be added to cover printed circuit board versions. Glenair Qualification Glenair has not completed qualification approval at this time. Glenair-supplied M32139 connectors will not be identified with the PIN (“Part or Identifying Number”) until Glenair has received approval. Glenair parts shipped prior to DSCC approval will be identified with “GS” prefix replacing the “M” prefix. |
