In The BeginningIn October of 1957, the Russian Sputnik I be-came the first man-made satellite in space, and in November of that same year a dog named "Laika" became the first living creature to experience low earth orbit. Just three months later, on the first day of February of 1958, the number of countries with a "successful" space program doubled, with the launch of Explorer I by the United States of America--and so the race was joined. |
