For general purpose applications, electrical connectors and accessories are conventionally constructed from brass, nickel aluminum bronze, aluminum, stainless steel, and more recently from titanium. For applications where weight savings and advanced corrosion resistance is required, Glenair offers both conductive and non-conductive composite thermoplastics as a major alternative material.

For most applications, composite connectors and accessories enjoy 40% weight savings over aluminum and 80% over stainless steel. The components provide unlimited corrosion and harsh environment protection from fluids, flammability and hydroscopicity.

Glenair composite components are produced in injection molded and machined versions and are ideally suited for use in harsh environments where resistance to high temperatures, out-gassing, and halogen-free operation are required. The components are ASTM E595 space rated, qualified to the shock, vibration, thread strength and bend moment requirements of MIL-C-38999 and MIL-C-85049, and also meet stringent EMI/RFI/HIRF and indirect lightning strike performance specifications.

Glenair composite material options include Ultem (PEI), Amodel (PPA), Ryton (PPS) and PEEK. Base materials can be augmented with conductive and non-conductive additives and reinforcing fibers to meet specific functional specifications. All designs provide a dimensionally stable and cadmium-free alternative to plated aluminum and brass, essentially eliminating corrosion losses due to galvanic coupling, and significantly reducing the total cost of ownership of the interconnect system.
